Ep. 6: Mothered in Many Ways

This week's Pulse Check is a little personal for me. It's Mother's Day week, and it's so exciting. And while Mother's Day hasn't looked typical in my world for a while, I want to share where I'm at.

My mom has suffered from dementia, and I haven't really had a coherent relationship with her in quite some time. But I'm okay. God has done a lot of healing there, and He has shown up in ways I can't even describe. It's been so awesome to feel His presence through this. But this day definitely feels different.

So if Mother's Day is amazing for you, I love that. And if it's a little layered and heavy, just know you're not alone.

I've been thinking about something. What if we zoomed out from just looking at this through one role and looked at the heart behind it instead? To me, mothering isn't just a title. It's a heart posture. It's a way of loving. It's nurturing. It's showing up. It's staying when things get hard. It's speaking life into people who can't see how amazing they truly are.

Scripture actually reflects this kind of love beyond biology. In Isaiah 66:13, God says, "As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you." He specifically uses the tender imagery of a mother comforting her child to show His love for His people. There's a patience and a steady love associated with a mother, and it comes straight from God.

So maybe today isn't only about celebrating moms, even though you absolutely should do that. (And my child, if you're watching this, definitely celebrate me.) Maybe it's also about honoring every person who has mothered someone. The mentor in your life. The friend who checks in all the time. The woman who is praying for you. The people who just make space for you to grow and be vulnerable.

For me, I've realized that God didn't necessarily remove that mother figure from my life. He multiplied it in different, incredible ways. I had an awesome mom, and I also have these mother figures in my life now that I get to celebrate too.

So today, let's celebrate moms. And let's celebrate love that looks like a mother in all forms. Maybe ask yourself, who has mothered me? And who can I show up for in this season to be that for somebody else?

It's an incredible love, and mothers go above and beyond. Let's celebrate them, and let's celebrate all those mother figures.

Happy, happy Mother's Day from Altrua Ministries.
